BCAL Year-end Report for 2016-17 fiscal year.

Press Release: Bergen County American Legion Yearend report for July 1, 2016- June 30, 2017

The following is the Annual report covering programs and initiatives undertaken or led by BCAL and except for Boys State does not include individual Post, Ladies Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion nor Legion Rider programs and donations. As you will read the BCAL is extremely active in the community, helping our fellow veterans and helping to support the youth of our community grow into our future leaders.

BCAL is proud to announce that it sponsored 142 young boys as delegates to the New Jersey American Legion Boys State program and that Samuel Cassidy sponsored by Hillsdale Post 162 was elected Lieutenant Governor and Tyler Holder from Dumont, sponsored by Teaneck post 128 was elected Senator and will attend Boys Nation in Washington, later in the month.

BCAL opened a Veterans Clothes closet in Little Ferry on June 22, which will be operated by Catholic Charities SOS Vets and Bergen County Veterans Services. New and slightly used clothing is available free of charge, call 973-951-9867, 973-592-1393 or 201-336-6325 Monday-Friday from 10 AM to 4 PM.

BCAL also joined with WAWA and the Red Cross to run blood drives at various post locations during the year and were successful in collecting over 277 pints.

Held the first county wide flag retirement at the Fire Academy in Mahwah in conjunction with a project for a scout’s Eagle Scout award.

At the Department Convention held in Wildwood June 8 & 9 the County was awarded a Plaque for contributing the most money and time to help our hospitalized and rehabbing veterans for the 6th year in a row.

During the course of the year BCAL sponsored the Legion’s Oratorical Contest, Legion Baseball League, MLB Pitch, hit and Run as well as the MLB Home Run Derby.

During the course of the year BCAL donated the following:

Boys State Delegates $39,000.00
Veterans Hospital and Rehab $67,810.00
Child Organ Transplant Association $1,120.00
Donations to Vets Organizations $1,100.00
Education and Scholarships $3,700.00
Homeless Veterans Unmet Needs $30,957.00
Total $162,801.00
