NEW YORK SHIPPING ASSOCIATION (NYSA) AND THE INTERNATIONAL LONSHOREMAN’S ASSOCIATION (ILA) DONATE $10,000 FOR HOMELESS VETERANS!
In a continuing partnership to hire and support our veterans, The American Legion’s Department and National Employer of the Year, NYSA, and the ILA donated a total of $10,000 to the Legion’s current Department Project for helping our homeless veterans and their families. These donations were presented at their 2016 Veterans Day observance at the GCT (Global Container Terminals), Bayonne in Jersey City. This brings our total for 5 annual Homeless Projects to about $680,000 with a goal of $765,000 by the end of this Legion year.
The Department’s Employment, Homelessness & Education Committee was invited to this observance based our Legion-only dedicated job fair wherein 400 veterans have been hired as a result of our efforts. After the ILA heard our observance remarks regarding our Homeless Veteran ongoing program, the AFL-CIO donated $5,000 and Local 1188 another $3,000. This is in addition to the generous gift of $2,000 prior to our remarks from the NYSA.
The first picture is their National Award with Commander Babli, and NYSA Director Beverly Fedorko. The second photo is the Department Award presentation with then Commander Mike Wilson, NYSA President John Nardi, Vice President Susan Winfree, National Commander Mike Helm and self. In addition to NYSA’s generosity, they also declined the National Convention travel expenses to the Convention City provided to National Award recipients. National HQ then made a $1,000 donation to OCW in their name.
THANK YOU NYSA AND ILA!
